Athirappilly is Kerala's biggest waterfall — a broad Chalakudy river drop into forested gorge country on the Western Ghats' edge, the standard day trip out of Kochi and a monsoon spectacle.
The falls & the forest
The river splits around rock islets before the main drop; viewpoints on both sides of the gorge frame it, and the climb down to the base is the classic wet-and-loud experience (steps, leeches in rain — go prepared). The surrounding Sholayar forests are elephant and hornbill country. Monsoon (Jun–Aug) is the thunder season; post-monsoon keeps flow with kinder weather.
