Pathiramanal Island, Vembanad Lake
Pathiramanal — 'sand of the moonlight' — is a small island refuge mid-lake between Alleppey and Kumarakom, wooded cover for resident and migratory birds and a favourite detour on backwater cruises.
The island
Reached only by water, the island is a green pause in the open lake: paths through low forest and scrub where cormorants, herons, kingfishers and seasonal migrants gather. Birding is best at first light and late afternoon; the midday island is a quiet walk.
How to visit
- On a houseboat crossing (Alleppey↔Kumarakom) — captains slow past the island margins.
- By bird-watching tour boat with binoculars and a guide.
- By hired country boat from Muhamma or Kumarakom side — ask your stay or us for the current arrangement.
It's a protected-feeling spot — carry out every bit of rubbish, keep voices low and give nesting cover a wide berth.
