Vembanad is the still centre of Kerala's backwaters — the state's longest lake, stretching across Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kollam districts, with Kumarakom's lagoons on one side and Alleppey's canals on the other.
The lake system
Rivers from the Western Ghats spill into Vembanad and reach the sea at Alleppey; barrier islands and dykes hold the fresh water against the salt. The lake is working water — fishing, paddy pumping, ferry routes — and leisure water: houseboats cruise its edges, kayaks slip through its margins, and Pathiramanal island sits mid-lake as a bird refuge. The Punnamada stretch hosts the famous boat race.
